The sound of the trumpet is heard today in nearly every style of music imaginable. Its brilliant tone speaks of royalty and grandeur in a symphonic setting, while in another venue, it may convey the soulful mood of a jazz trumpeter.
A trumpet may look simple enough, but it takes some real physical development to play it well! Most trumpet players struggle because they lack physical development and have poor technique. This is the result of an incorrect approach to the instrument, from not knowing how or what to practice, or from not knowing even where to begin! All levels of trumpet players have found that there is much to learn from Bruce. He has students from beginners to professionals.
There are so many wrong ways to play the trumpet, but from Bruce you will learn to play the one, correct way. This “right way” was handed down from the greats of the past. Two of the greatest players/teachers of all time were Herbert Clarke, and Claude Gordon. Claude was one of Clarke’s most illustrious students. Claude became 1st trumpet with CBS in Hollywood for many years, and to this day is regarded as one of the greats. Bruce studied with Claude for 15 years. Read this article for what that was like, and for stories about life on the road with Elvis Presley and Stan Kenton.
Claude, who lived in the Los Angeles area, would come up to the Bay Area to teach for a week once every month, and for 7 years taught from the same music store where Bruce taught. It was in that store where the Claude Gordon Teacher’s Course was conceived and implemented. Bruce is one of the few brass teachers with the honor of being a Certified Claude Gordon Teacher.
With each lesson you will receive a personalized lesson plan, with detailed instructions as to how to practice the routines. Musical studies will cover as many styles as the student is able to handle, along with classical and jazz phrasing. Music theory is taught in context based on the material at hand. Jazz improvisation is covered when the student is ready and wishes to learn it.
When you take trumpet lessons with Bruce, you will find your frustrations diminish and your enjoyment grow with every lesson. His 45 years of teaching and playing experience, combined with compassion, understanding, and insight into each student, assure that you will make substantial improvement!
The lessons are either in-person at his Cincinnati studio or over Skype, or a combination of both, as many of his students have found works well for them. Beginner’s lessons are a half hour a week. Intermediate to advanced player’s lessons are an hour lesson every other week.
